Your life is a precious gift, one that should be cherished and enjoyed. After all, you only get one chance to live. Are you spending your time worrying about the wrong things? Any time you spend worrying or focusing on the negative is time that you can never get back.
The good news is that if you are spending too much time worrying and not enough time enjoying life, this is a problem that is easily fixed. You do not need to buy anything. There is no need to go to therapy. In fact, all that you need to do is make a few minor tweaks in the way you think in your day to day life.
Comparing Yourself to Others
Life is not a competition. If you spend your time comparing yourself to others, you are never going to be able to enjoy the here-and-now. It is okay to be happy for your friends’ success without looking down on yourself for not achieving the same accolades.
Instead of comparing yourself to your friends and family, focus on the positive aspects of your life. What do you have to be proud of, what is it that drives you to be a better person every day? Those questions should remain on the forefront of your mind, not competition.
Boredom
Remember those long summer days without school to occupy our brains? I remember complaining constantly to my mother “I’m bored!” How much more could we have enjoyed the summer if we had just stopped complaining for a minute and taken in everything around us?
Boredom is a trap. It is a negative mindset that prohibits you from seeing the beauty in the world around you. Instead of complaining about boredom, find something productive to do. Take a walk in nature, write a story, read a book. In general, being productive is a good feeling. Being productive makes you feel accomplished and feeling accomplished promotes a happiness within yourself.
Fear of Missing Out
Fear of missing out (FOMO) is a real issue in our society, especially with a rise in the use of technology and social media. Seeing your friends post about their seemingly amazing lives can leave you wondering if you’re missing out. Remember, however, people tend to post only the highlights of their lives. Their social media stream is probably not telling the whole story.
Fear of missing out causes unnecessary anxiety that prohibits you from experiencing the amazing life you are living. This is very similar to comparing yourself to others, but I would venture to say that experiencing fear of missing out is almost worse.
A Negative Mindset
Maybe this stems from the social media saturated culture in which we live, or maybe it is simply human nature, but a negative mindset can seriously stand in the way of enjoying your life to the fullest. Humans are inherently self-centered. We want to indulge in the complaints and to perpetuate our pity parties.
However, it is possible to overcome these negative thoughts. Through concentrated practice, you can focus your thoughts on the positive side of things. When life throws you a curveball, find a way to look on the bright side. Think to yourself: what are the possible positives of what is happening to you right now?
By making a few simple changes to the way you think about your life, you can learn to enjoy it to the absolute fullest. The only way to make this change, though, is to make a commitment to a positive thought process and stick to that commitment.
