Old-Fashion Made from Scratch Chocolate Pudding w/Meringue Topping
This is a recipe from my grandmother and mom. It was always one of my favorite things mom made. I remember her using an electric skillet and making this for special occasions. Of course back then, we were missing some of the new technology and it was easy to burn the milk, etc. as you were cooking. It’s much easier to make now days and a lot less time consuming. #homemadechocolatepie
Here’s the recipe:
Chocolate Pudding
- 1 level tbsp cocoa (if you like dark chocolate you might try a higher % cocoa and a little more sugar)
- 3 egg yolks – beat (save whites for meringue)
- 5 level tbsp – flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 ½ cups milk
- Blend (sift) cocoa, flour, sugar together, set aside
- Add 1/3 cup milk to egg yolks and beat together, beat until smooth (no lumps)
- Mix blended ingredients and egg mixture together – mix well
- Bring remaining milk to steam – not boil
- Add blended ingredients & egg mixture to steaming milk.
- Stir and Boil to thicken
- Pour over vanilla wafers or into pie crust
Meringue
- 3-4 egg whites, beat until soft peaks
- 2 level tsp sugar for each egg white
- ¼ tsp cream of tarter
- ½ tsp vanilla
- Beat until stiff peaks
- Put on hot pudding
Bake at 300 degrees until brown
Try this one out for your family in honor of National Chocolate Pudding Day on June 26,2020. I suggest eating it warm out of the oven but it’s just as good cold. Of course, you may need to double up on the recipe because everyone will want an extra helping. They will love it and ask for it frequently. #nationalchocolatepuddingday
